Saline County Clerk Brittni Burton joined several of her counterparts from across the state at Jefferson City this week to show support for a bill aimed at protecting election workers.
Senate Bill 84 was introduced by Sen. Jamie Burger (R-Cape Girardeau) and, if passed, would create the offense of harassing or intimidating an election official in the performance of their official duties. Burton attended a committee hearing on the measure Monday.
Burton says she left the state capitol feeling confident that the measure would become law.
Similar legislation was proposed the past two sessions of the Missouri General Assembly. A near-identical bill was introduced in the House by Rep. Peggy McGaugh (R-Carrollton) and has also been referred to committee.
