The Mizzou women’s basketball team had a strong start and showed promise Thursday, Jan. 30 in Austin, but they were unable to respond to a third-quarter rally as the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns got past the Tigers 70-61.
Laniah Randle scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Tigers, including a three-pointer in the second quarter that gave Mizzou their largest lead of the night at 11. Grace Slaughter added 16 points and Ashton Judd had 13 as the Tigers led by two at the half. A 19-10 third quarter allowed Texas to claim the lead for good, as Mizzou could only get within three after losing the lead. The Longhorns’ Taylor Jones led the way with 17 points, while Madison Booker tallied 16. Rori Harmon claimed 10 assists.
Despite outscoring Texas 36-28 in the paint, the Tigers went cold in the third quarter with just four field goals, followed by no three-point baskets and no trips to the foul line in the fourth quarter. The loss now puts Mizzou at a 12-11 record, including 1-7 in SEC play. The Tigers host Tennessee this Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
