A Mizzou alumna is heading back to the Midwest in a trade involving four WNBA teams.

The Indiana Fever announced Sunday, Feb. 2 that Sophie Cunningham would join the franchise as part of a blockbuster deal also involving the Phoenix Mercury, Dallas Wings, and Connecticut Sun. The shooting guard and Rock Bridge product played four seasons at Mizzou before Phoenix drafted her in the second round of the 2019 WNBA Draft. She’s appeared in 182 games for the Mercury. Last season Cunningham played in all 40 games, including 21 starts, where she averaged 28 minutes per contest and scored eight-point-four points per game.

Cunningham is likely to provide veteran support for the face of the Fever franchise, Caitlin Clark. The Fever will also get Jaelyn Brown and the 19th pick in this year’s WNBA draft from Phoenix, while sending NaLyssa Smith to Dallas and the eighth overall pick to Connecticut. Indiana and Dallas also agreed to swap third-round picks in the 2027 draft. Indiana also announced deals to bring in forwards DeWanna Bonner and Natasha Howard.

The trade was initially reported by multiple sources Friday night as involving three teams, anchored by Satou Sabally’s move from Dallas to Phoenix.
