The Mizzou women’s basketball team led by as much as six in the opening quarter, but they were unable to hold off a strong LSU Tigers squad, resulting in a 71-60 loss Thursday, Feb. 7 at Mizzou Arena to the sixth-ranked Bayou Bengals.
Mizzou went on a seven-point run to stake their early lead, with Ashton Judd netting a three-pointer to put the host Tigers out in front for much of the quarter. The second quarter saw LSU wake up by shooting seven-of-13 from the field, including four out of five from three-point range. Despite taking the lead twice in the third, Mizzou had no answer after LSU ended the frame with seven unanswered points from Flau’Jae Johnson.
Johnson finished the game with 19 points to lead LSU, one of four visiting Tigers in double-figures. Aneesaw Morrow had 14 rebounds to go with her 13 points. Leading Mizzou was Grace Slaughter with 18 points, while Ashton Judd tallied 17 and Laniah Randle added 15. Angelique Ngalakulondi recorded 12 rebounds but fouled out with under six minutes remaining in the game. Despite a better field shooting percentage at over 40 percent, Mizzou only claimed six baskets from distance and was 63 percent from the free-throw line.
The black-and-gold Tigers’ conference struggles continue as their record in the SEC falls to 1-9, along with a season record of 12-13. Mizzou visit Texas A&M this Sunday afternoon, with tip-off around 3 p.m.
