basketball-on-court

The Jamestown girls and Smithton boys continued the trends that have been going on of late as they each posted victories in Game of the Week action that was heard Monday, Feb. 10 on KMMO-FM.

Senior Night in Smithton saw the Tiger boys have a really good time while holding off the visiting Eagles, 69-57. Meanwhile, the girls’ contest failed to go the way of the home team as the Tiger losing streak continued with a loss to Jamestown, 47-27 All the way around, it proved to be more of the same as Smithton’s boys have now beaten the Eagles the last 13 times they’ve met while Jamestown’s girls are the owners of a six-game winning streak in the matchups against their Pettis County opponent.

Big Lead Was Too Much To Overcome

The difference in the nightcap was the start that Smithton got off to as the Tigers raced out in front, 22-14 after one quarter and then widened their advantage to 16, as they led Jamestown, 30-14 early in the second period. To their credit, the Eagles didn’t go away, countering with an 18-5 run which quickly trimmed the deficit to 35-32 just before halftime. However, that proved to be as close as Jamestown could get the rest of the way with the Tigers holding the Eagles at bay down the stretch. In the second half, the lead fluctuated between five and twelve points with Smithton on top 55-50 after three periods before earning a 69-57 victory once the final horn had sounded.

The Tigers won thanks to some very balanced scoring as they had five players in double figures, two of which didn’t even start the game. Junior Dakota Wells and freshman Carter Riley both came off the bench to lead Smithton with 17 and 16 points respectively. Chipping in with 14, 12 and 10 points of their own were Ryan Pond, Sam Bray and Logan Williams as the Tigers improved to 10-12 on the year. Meanwhile, Jamestown fell to 6-14 with Tyler Wilson tallying 19 points while Ohitika Eagleman scored 15 for the visitors.

Gradually Pulling Away

In the opener, the Jamestown girls grabbed the lead for good midway through the first period and never looked back, defeating Smithton for the second time this season by at least 20 points.

The Eagles were ahead, 12-5 after one quarter and then 21-11 at the half before gradually extending their advantage to 20, 47-27 during the final few moments of play.

Alyssa Hees scored 13 points to lead Jamestown as she tallied all 12 of the points that the Eagles mustered during the first quarter. After her, Samantha Wilson and Rylee Hirschvogel both tacked on eight second-half points, helping Jamestown improve to 12-7 on the season. Smithton’s loss was their ninth in a row as they fell to 3-17 overall. Callie Goss had 10 points and Kenna Simmons tossed in nine for the Tigers.
