Jordan Binnington recorded an assist for Team Canada, but the Blues netminder allowed goals by Jake Guentzel and Dylan Larkin as Team USA prevailed 3-1 on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Bell Centre in Montréal to book a spot in the final with one game to spare.
Binnington’s clearance from behind the net to Drew Doughty helped to set up Connor McDavid, who surged across the ice to fire his shot past Connor Hellebuyck to put Canada on the board first. However, Binnington was bested by Guentzel five minutes later, who got the puck from Jack Eichel and zipped one into the net from Binnington’s right side. The Americans took the lead halfway through the second period when Dylan Larkin drove one into goal on a breakaway. Guentzel secured the win with an empty-net goal with 80 seconds remaining.
The game started very physical, as the game stopped three times in the first ten seconds for fisticuffs that sent both Matthew and Brady Tkachuk to the sin bin, followed by the Blues’ Colton Parayko. Canada outshot the U.S. 26-23, while Team USA maintained the physicality with 34 hits to Canada’s 29, and a slight 30-28 advantage in faceoffs.
Team USA’s two wins in regulation means that the U.S. will arrive in Boston knowing they’ll be playing in the final, while Canada will have to defeat Finland and hope for a favorable outcome when the U.S. play Sweden. Both games are Monday at TD Garden.
