
Area girls’ wrestling teams competed Saturday, Feb. 15 in their district tournaments, with wrestlers from 20 area teams qualifying for state.
Brookfield earned top honors in the Class One, District 2 tournament at Saint Charles West, collecting 152 points. Three wrestlers won their weight class, including Riley Howell, Jayden Keller, and Mya Sackrey. Raylee King and Hadlye Sackrey finished in the top four of their classes and will also advance to the state tournament Feb. 26 and 27 in Columbia. Marshall finished in eighth with 83.5 points, with Kendra Bellamy, Genavieve Ceja, and Sherlyn Solano all finishing fourth in their weight classes. Chillicothe finished tenth with 77 points, as Yoo Jung Lee won first in her weight class and Toni Stoner was fourth in her class. Other weight class winners from our area included Breanne Gibbs of Moberly.
Knob Noster finished second at the Class One, District 3 tournament hosted by Nevada. The Panthers finished on 153.5 points, 23 behind champions Marshfield, while claiming three weight class titles. Amelia Brown, Kylie Miller, and Zoey Schroeder all won their classes with falls in under four minutes, while Bailey Brown finished second in her class. Versailles finished fifth with 106.5 points, with four wrestlers advancing. Holden was also in the top ten with 99.5 points, good for eighth. Haley Brooks won her weight class to lead the Eagles, while Macey Greene and Adasyn Yoder finished second in their classes. Also advancing to state with a district class title were Kimber Drenon of Windsor.
Four MRVC schools finished in the top ten at the Class One, District 4 tournament hosted by Kearney. While the hosts prevailed with 191 points, Odessa was second on 167.5. The Bulldogs claimed two individual district titles, as Emily Buschoff and Aalyiah Sanders won their classes. Bella Palmer finished second in her class, while Brooke Butler, Addison Eddleman and Wylie Smith claimed third in their classes to also advance to state. Lexington ranked sixth with 99 points, followed by Oak Grove (96 points) and Lafayette County (91.5 points). Lexington’s Mireya Gonzalez topped her weight class to lead the four Minutewomen en route to Columbia, while Kyana Huseynov won her class to be among three Huskers punching tickets to state. Oak Grove’s Eva Alexander and Lauren Phillips both finished second in their weight classes. Other area wrestlers with a district title include Lone Jack’s Lillian Mccleary.
The area’s lone team in Class Two, Sedalia Smith-Cotton, finished eighth in the team standings at the District 3 tournament in Belton. The Tigers posted 93 points, advancing three wrestlers to the state tournament Feb. 28 and March 1. Jasmine Wolfe finished second in the 125-pound weight class, winning her first four bouts before falling in a major decision to district champion Addison Harkins of Nixa. Jazlyn Smith-Freeman picked up third in the 115-pound class with a 5-1 record, while Zakiyah Williams finished fourth in the 105-pound class.
The boys wrestling district tournaments are this weekend (Feb. 21 & 22) in all four classifications.
