The 15th-ranked Missouri Tigers grabbed the first 12 points of the game and never trailed, stunning the fourth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 110-98 on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
Three-point baskets by Trent Pierce and Anthony Robinson II in the first minute of the game set the tone at a sold-out Mizzou Arena, as the Tigers led by as much as 20 late in the first half. Alabama closed to within six halfway through the second, making six straight field goal attempts, before Mizzou responded with a 9-0 run to reassert control. The Tide would get just as close with a minute remaining, but a Tamar Bates layup, followed by his fourth steal of the night, would seal the win for the Tigers, who scored the program’s most points in a regulation conference game since 1990.
Mark Mitchell led the Tigers with 31 points, while Caleb Grill added 25 from the bench, including three of Mizzou’s nine three-pointers. Grill also had ten rebounds. Mark Sears led Alabama with 35 points, including five baskets from beyond the arc. Despite Alabama making 13 three-pointers, they turned the ball over 14 times, including losing 12 steals to Mizzou. The Tigers shot 60 percent on the night while going 31-for-47 from the free-throw line.
Mizzou are now 20-6 on the year, with a 9-4 mark in the SEC. That puts the Tigers three games behind Auburn in the conference standings and in fifth position, as Texas A&M have the tiebreaker over Mizzou. The Tigers travel to Arkansas on Saturday night to face the Razorbacks; pregame is at 6:30 p.m., with tipoff at 7 p.m., on KMMO.
