Two area wrestling teams are celebrating team district titles from this past weekend’s bouts, but many area programs still have grapplers preparing for this week’s state tournament in Columbia.
Lone Jack rolled to a Class One, District Two title, amassing a score of 204.5 and qualifying nine wrestlers for state. Brayden Ortiz won the 106-pound class while Ty White took top honors in the 132-pound class. Three Mules finished second in their class while four place third. Warsaw also claimed two individual district titles en route to a second-place finish with 144 points. Jayce Estes remains undefeated on the year, picking up his 37th win to top the 113-pound class while Josh Harvath was first in the 175-pound class. Four other Warsaw wrestlers finished in the top four to advance to state. Holden ranked sixth with 94 points, with Aiden Christian winning the 285-pound class and three other Eagles advancing, while Cole Camp was seventh with 76.5 points. Grant Rodriguez won the 165-pound class to lead the Bluebirds’ contingent of five qualifiers.
Odessa held off Cameron to pick up top honors at the Class Two, District Four tournament hosted by Excelsior Springs. The Bulldogs had five class champions among eight qualifying grapplers and posted a 196.5. Jet Bbrown (144), Kamden Hooper (138), Brady Jones (126), Michael Scott (175) and Blaine Wallace (132) all claimed class titles for Odessa. Oak Grove was fifth with 97.5, as Elliot Atwell (190), Kale Martin (106), and Perry Morgan (113) all won their weight classes. A fourth Panther advanced to state, Amos Parks. Chillicothe was seventh on 86, featuring class champion Bo Smith (285) among four qualifiers. The Hornets finished a half-point better than Knob Noster.
Meanwhile in Class One, District Three, two Brookfield wrestlers remain undefeated thus far, as Devan Parn improved to 43-0 with top honors in the 190-pound weight class, while Peyton Parn won the 138-pound class to improve to 24-0. They were among four Bulldog class-winners and six state-qualifying grappers who led Brookfield to a second place finish totaling 147 points. It was hard to catch Centralia, who won the district with 218 points and had four weight class champions among their ten state qualifiers. Marceline was third with 141.5 points, led by Scout Gooch’s victory in the 215-pound class. The hosts Versailles were sixth on 104.5 points, with Brandon Brewer winning the 120-pound class and four other Tigers qualifying for state. Lafayette County was seventh with 85.5 points, as Braxton Ernst won the 175-pound class while four other Huskers posted top-four finishes. Tipton was eighth with 76 points, ahead of Lexington (68.5) and Macon (68). Lexington’s Braxton Emerson won the 150-pound class.
In Class One, District Four, Polo finished tenth with 52.5 points. Chase Wilson won the 144-pound class by virtue of a match forfeit. Dalton Gatrel finished third in the 157-pound weight class.
The Class Two, District Two tournament at Mexico saw Moberly finish fourth with 155.5 points, well ahead of fifth place Boonville (107.5). Seven Spartans advanced to state, including class champions Brooks Head (215) and Landon Morris (150). Boonville qualified four wrestlers for state, while both of Hallsville’s qualifiers won their weight classes, Paxton Crane (120) and Colt West (165).
Six Warrensburg Tigers qualified for state at the Class Three, District Three tournament at Bolivar, finishing sixth with 109.5 points. Jaylen Civil won the 126-pound class with a technical fall over Helias’ Alex Wieberg. Tate Cook, Dayton Dunn, Justus Griffith, Cruz Villegas, and Henry Wheeler also qualified for Warrensburg. Marshall finished tenth in the Class Three, District Four tournament, hosted at Belton. Mason Evans led the Owls as he finished fourth in the 175-pound class, as Marshall picked up 46.5 points. Smith-Cotton, our area’s lone Class Four program, will also send one wrestler to state. Adarein Hawkins finished fourth in the 126-pound class, falling in both his opening contest and the third-place matchup to Neosho’s Anthony Stotts.
The Class One and Two boys tournaments are this Wednesday and Thursday in Columbia, while the Class Three and Four tournaments are Friday and Saturday.
