
Four area wrestlers returned from Columbia on Saturday with state wrestling medals.
Marshall’s Mason Evans finished the weekend on the podium, sixth in Class Three’s 175-pound weight class. After defeating Korben Johnson of Warrenton and Treyvontay Haire of Camdenton on Friday, Evans fell in three-and-a-half minutes to eventual state champion Mason McCurry of Bolivar. Evans was then defeated in the consolation semifinal by Ali Mohsen of Parkway Central, and then in the fifth-place bout by Belton’s Quinten Attebury. Evans finished the season with a 31-12 record.
Of Warrensburg’s six wrestlers, Jayden Civil was the only one to come home with a medal, finishing fourth in Class Three’s 126-pound weight class. Civil lost a narrow 11-10 decision in the third-place match to Manny McCauley of Warrenton. Civil started the weekend with a technical fall win over Markell Kimmins of Parkway North, but was then defeated in less than a minute by Carter Wallis of Hillsboro to end up in the wrestlebacks. Civil posted wins over Hank Marriott of Platte County, Landon Westfall of Kearney, and Andrew Garcia of St Pius X of Kansas City. Civil’s season wraps up at 39-5.
Two of Smith-Cotton’s girls wrestlers finished third in their weight classes at the Class Two state tournament. Jazlyn Smith-Freeman posted wins in the 115-pound weight class Friday over Kaylee Horman of Seckman and Haddley Dale of Troy Buchanan, but then lost her semifinal bout Saturday morning to Alyssa Salemie of Branson. Smith-Freeman rebounded with major decision victories over Kirra Dunscombe of Eureka and Maya Saldivar of William Christman to place third, concluding her season with a 42-8 mark.
Jasmine Wolfe followed a similar path in the 125-pound class, beating Jorgie Johnston of Winnetonka and Millie Robison of KC Northeast on Friday, only to take a decision loss against Jena Gamahin of Fort Zumwalt West. Wolfe took decision wins in the consolation semifinal over Anna Bowles of Francis Howell and then Kylie Dunn of Fort Osage, to complete the season 45-5. A third Smith-Cotton wrestler, Zakiyah Williams, claimed a technical fall in her first wrestleback round before being eliminated in the next match. The Tigers ranked 17th in the team standings with 36-and-a-half points.
Smith-Cotton’s lone boys wrestler at state, Adarein Hawkins, lost both his contests Friday evening in the Class Four 126-pound weight class. Hawkins fell in 48 seconds to Hank Benter of Hickman, then was eliminated by a sudden victory claimed by Dylan Crupper of Kirkwood.
