The Missouri Tigers women’s basketball team saw a 14-point lead turn into a 22-point deficit in the span of 13 minutes, as the Tigers allowed 31 straight points to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a 75-55 loss Wednesday, March 5 at the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina.
Mizzou had built a nine-point lead over the first half, aided by 45-percent shooting including a five-for-12 mark from three-point range. Ashton Judd recorded her 15-hundredth career point as part of her 15-point night to lead Mizzou, with all those points coming in the first half. The Tigers picked up the first five points of the second half, and led 47-36 with 6:44 remaining in the third, before proceeding to miss their next 12 shots while turning the ball over 10 times. Grace Slaughter’s layup in the paint with 4:39 remaining in the game made the score 67-49 Mississippi State. The Tigers were limited to 19 percent shooting in the second half, as Mississippi State claimed seven steals while netting five three-pointers.
In addition to Judd’s 15 points, Nyah Wilson recorded 11 points from the bench to lead Mizzou. Jerkaila Jordan led Mississippi State with 21 points, while Destiney McPhaul added 19 from the bench.
Mizzou’s season ends with a 14-18 record. It was also the final game for head coach Robin Pingeton, who announced last week she would step down at the end of the season. Her 15-year tenure ends at Mizzou with a record of 250-217.
Mizzou Men Struggle At Oklahoma
The 15th-ranked Mizzou Tigers struggled to contain the Oklahoma Sooner offense, allowing the Sooners to record 20 field goals in the opening half en route to a 96-84 loss Wednesday night in Norman.
The Tigers only led twice in the contest, as Oklahoma went on a nine-point run midway through the opening half to take the lead for good. The Sooners outscored Mizzou in the paint 48-34 while going seven-for-17 from behind the arc and securing six steals. Jeremiah Fears led the Sooners with 31 points, along with five assists and four rebounds. He was among four Sooners in double figures. Mizzou was led by Mark Mitchell with 18 points, while Caleb Grill tallied 16 from the bench.
It’s the third straight road loss for the Tigers, whose chances of claiming a double-bye at next week’s SEC Tournament in Nashville are even slimmer. Mizzou will wrap up the regular season with a home game Saturday at 11 a.m. against Kentucky; pregame from the Tiger Radio Network begins at 10:30 a.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
