The American Legion’s annual County Government Day on Friday, March 7 will give Saline County’s juniors not only a chance to learn about the importance of local governments, but also their history.

Steve Olson, adjutant of the Malta Bend Memorial Post 558, says over 50 students from five of the county’s high schools will tour the courthouse in Marshall following an opening presentation in the large courtroom.

In addition to learning about each of the county offices, participating students will learn more about the 144-year-old courthouse building.

Olson is organizing this year’s event, the first since the pandemic put the longtime event on hiatus. He says county government setups vary from state to state, reflecting their state’s history and heritage.

County Government Day will also include visits to Missouri Valley College and the Saline County Justice Facility.
