A 29-year veteran of the Johnson County Fire Protection District has lost his life in the line of duty.

The district announced Saturday, March 8, 2025 the death of Captain Vernon Collett. According to the district, Collett collapsed while actively fighting a natural cover fire Saturday afternoon. His colleagues performed lifesaving efforts for nearly an hour before Collett was pronounced dead. Additional details will be released by the department later this weekend.
