Additional details are coming to light in the case of a Slater woman accused of embezzling funds from a government body in Saline County.
Stephanie D. Meyer posted bond of $25,000 Monday, March 24 and was released from the Saline County Jail, days after she was arrested and charged with the felonies of stealing of at least 25-thousand dollars, forgery, and fraudulent use of a credit or debit device.
The probable cause statement available on CaseNet, the Missouri Courts’ online record system, has the name of the government entity redacted. KMMO News has obtained publicly accessible records from the state auditor’s office that show that until late last year, Meyer worked as the clerk of the Gilliam Special Road District. The records were prepared by Meyer and show her signature as the district’s clerk. The records also show her annual salary, which ranged from $2530.52 in 2015 to $3878.64 in 2023, and match the figures listed in the probable cause statement. No other payments to Meyer were indicated in the reports submitted to the state auditor.
According to the probable cause statement, the Saline County Sheriff’s Department begin its investigation of Meyer in September, after a witness provided bank statements dating back to 2017, alleging that Meyer had written checks to herself in excess of her monthly salary. The probable cause statement also accuses Meyer of paying her personal property taxes in June 2023 using an electronic debit from the district’s checking account, and for placing an order on Amazon delivered to her home totaling $327.02.
The probable cause statement goes on to detail Meyer’s interaction with the deputies who arrested her Friday at her home in Slater. According to the statement, Meyer told deputies that she had been on pain medicine because of poor health and was, quote: “just trying to get the organizations business done and work her regular job”. Meyer then referred to the each of the payments as accidents.
Meyer will make her initial appearance April 2 in a Saline County circuit courtroom.
