Marshall’s quest for its first win of the season came up short in a 6-5 loss to Fulton on Tuesday, March 25.

The Owls got in a hole early, giving up four runs in the first inning. Marshall starter Emmitt Verts got off to a shaky start, giving up three hits and hitting two batters in the first inning. He settled in after, only allowing one more run over the next four frames. He finished the day going five innings, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk.

Marshall got two runs back in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on a sacrifice bunt from Aiden Dryer and a throwing error from Fulton catcher Justin Case. Trailing 5-2 in the fifth inning, the Owls got a rally started with Chase Thompson and Logan Kirchhoff getting on base. Thompson came around to score after an RBI groundout, and Kirchhoff came home on a wild pitch to get Marshall within a run. The Owls got a third run in the innings after Wyatt Griffitt stole home on a double steal attempt.

Thompson came on in relief of Verts in the sixth inning, allowing the go-ahead run after a single from Luke Holland.

With a one-run lead, the Hornets sent Ethan Milius to the mound to close out the victory. Milius was perfect in the final two innings, striking out the side in the sixth and seventh.
The Owls fall to 0-3 on the season, while Fulton improves to 3-1.

Marshall will be back in action later this week at the Knob Noster Tournament. The Owls will face Pleasant Hill on Thursday.
