A freshman at Northwestern R-I School claimed 59 correct tossups to lead his Eagles to the Carroll-Livingston Activities Association championship Tuesday, March 25.
Bryce Hayes led all scorers by answering 59 out of 110 tossup questions correct across five rounds of competition at the CLAA Scholar Bowl tournament, hosted at Norborne. The freshman’s performance included 14 tossups in the championship bout against Norborne, resulting in a 230-120 victory for the Eagles. Hayes tells KMMO News what it meant to bring the title to Mendon.
Hayes says Keytesville gave the Eagles the most difficult challenge during the conference’s regular season. Northwestern posted preliminary round wins over Hardin-Central, Tina-Avalon and Bosworth, before defeating Hale in the semifinals and besting the host Pirates in the championship. Hayes credits the guidance of his coaches Kynlee Dysart and Kyle Speichinger.
Hayes’ teammates on the squad include Sarah Batye, Andreas Buchanan, Payton Spencer, Sam Parris, and Sophia Speichinger. The Eagles now prepare for their district tournament April 12, which Bevier will host. Among the teams in Northwestern’s district is North Shelby, who has appeared in the last four Class One State Championship games.
