The Kansas City Royals opened the 2025 season with a 7-4 loss to the Cleveland Guardians in ten innings.

Kansas City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning after Vinnie Pasquantino drilled his first home run of the season.

Cleveland started to chip away at the lead, scoring runs in the fourth and fifth to get within a run. Kansas City starter pitched into the sixth inning, allowing a lead-off single to Carlos Santana before getting pulled. Angel Zerpa came on in relief and immediately gave up a two-run homer to Kyle Manzardo to give Cleveland a one-run lead.

The Royals came back in the ninth, getting a sac-fly from Michael Massey to send the game to extras.

The Guardians came out ready in the tenth inning, as Steven Kwan doubled home the go-ahead run to give Cleveland the lead again. Cleveland added to their lead after Manzardo, who finished just a single away from the cycle, doubled home two more runs to make it 7-4.

Kansas City was unable to respond, going down in order in the bottom of the tenth.

Ragans finished with a no-decision for his efforts, going five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Sam Long took the loss for Kansas City, giving up all three runs in the extra frame.

Both teams have an off day on Friday before resuming the series on Saturday, March 29. First pitch from Kauffman Stadium is at 3:10 p.m.
