The St Louis Cardinals claimed three runs in the sixth inning, clearing the way for a 5-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, March 29 at Busch Stadium.

Jorge Alcala failed to record an out in relief of Twins starter Joe Ryan, hobbled after Nolan Arenado’s leadoff double deflected off Alcala’s glove. After an injury delay, Alcala remained in the game, where he allowed a walk to Alec Burleson and a single to Iván Herrera, scoring Arenado. Reliever Louis Varland then allowed a walk to Jordan Walker and struck out the next two batters, only to give up a single to Lars Nootbaar that brought home Burleson and Herrera.

Arenado scored the Cardinals’ first run of the game in the bottom on the first with an RBI single to center field, only for the Twins’ Will Castro to send a line drive to right field for an RBI double. Brendan Donovan tacked on an insurance run with his sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the eighth.

Cardinals starter Erick Fedde picked up the win, recording a quality start with one run on two hits and two strikeouts over six innings.

The Cardinals will go for the sweep of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon at 1:15 p.m.
