The Kansas City Royals fell to the Cleveland Guardians 6-2 on Sunday, March 30 in the final game of their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals threatened early when Vinnie Pasquantino tripled with a fly ball to right field; unfortunately for the Royals, Pasquantino was stranded at third after a Salvador Perez pop-out to second. The Guardians capitalized when Gabriel Arias delivered a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Carlos Santana. Cleveland added another two runs in the fifth with Kyle Manzardo’s second home run of the weekend, while Arias delivered a solo home run in the sixth. The Guardians also added a run on a fielder’s choice later in the inning, while Daniel Schneemann added a home run in the eighth. The Royals were able to plate two runs in the eighth, first with a Bobby Witt Junior single bringing home Dairon Blanco, then a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
While the bullpen allowed five runs across four innings, starter Michael Wacha was charged with the loss. He went four innings and allowed the initial run on four hits and four walks while striking out two. Tanner Bibee, who was a scratch from Operning Day because of food poisoning, quickly returned to form by allowing just two hits in five-and-two-thirds innings of work, allowing a pair of walks while striking out two.
The Royals will look to rebound when they travel to Milwaukee to face a Brewers squad that were swept by the Yankees to start the season. First pitch from American Family Field is at 1:10 p.m.; pregame begins at 12:30 on KMMO AM 1300.
