A lead-off home run and RBI double lifted the Kansas City Royals to their first win of the season, a 4-3 comeback victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday, March 29 at Kauffman Stadium.
Maikel Garcia led off the seventh inning with a home run to left field off a one-one pitch from Paul Sewald, tying the game at three apiece. Cavan Biggio then got on base, with pinch runner Dairon Blanco stealing second. That set up Bobby Witt Jr’s double on a line drive to left field, bringing home Blanco.
Cleveland had opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI single from Bo Naylor, and added a run in the third. The first of two RBIs by Salvador Perez came in the bottom of the fourth, when he singled in Jonathan India. Perez then responded to Steven Kwan’s solo shot in the fifth with a bloop single hit in Kwan’s direction in the sixth, scoring Kyle Isbel.
Starters Seth Lugo and Gavin Williams picked up no decisions, with Lugo allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four, and Williams fanning a pair of Royals while allowing two runs on four hits and a walk. Daniel Lynch IV claimed the win, going two innings without allowing a Cleveland hit. Carlos Estévez recorded his first save as a Royal, striking out one in the ninth while allowing a walk. Paul Sewald was tagged with the loss and blown save, as he only lasted 0.2 innings and was charged with two earned runs on two hits and a strikeout.
The Royals and Guardians conclude their season-opening series Sunday afternoon at 1:10 p.m., with pregame from 12:30 on KMMO AM 1300.
