
The St Louis Cardinals couldn’t keep up with the Los Angeles Angels in extra innings, falling in 11 at Busch Stadium on Tuesday, April 1 by a score of 9-7.
The Angels scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead, off doubles from Luis Rengifo and Mike Trout. The Cardinals had plated the first run in the second when Jordan Walker singled in Nolan Gorman. Walker added a home run in the fourth, and the Cardinals tied the game on an Angels throwing error in the eighth, allowing Lars Nootbaar to score. Offenses lit up in the tenth inning, when Nolan Schanuel tripled home Kyren Paris and Yoán Moncada, then was brought home by Jo Adell. The Cardinals responded with Luken Baker’s double that scored Victor Scott II and Masyn Winn, followed by a Nolan Arenado single that scored Michael Siani. Paris singled in the 11th to give Los Angeles the lead back, while Moncada doubled in the ultimate game winner with a double that scored two. The Cardinals brought home the leadoff runner with a single from Scott, but were unable to match the Angels’ output.
Starters Kyle Hendricks for Los Angeles and Matthew Liberatore for St Louis had no decisions, as both pitchers went six innings. Hendricks allowed two runs on seven hits, while Liberatore allowed three runs on six hits; both pitchers posted four punchouts. Ryan Fernandez and Chris Roycroft were both tagged with three runs (two earned) on a pair of hits and one walk in their extra inning of work, with Roycroft assessed the loss. Despite blowing the save in the tenth, Ryan Johnson recorded one out in the eleventh to secure the win, allowing an unearned run on two hits and one walk.
The Cardinals fall to 3-2 on the season. The final game of the homestand against the Angels is Wednesday afternoon at 12:15 p.m.
