The Kansas City Royals avoided the worst of the weather Saturday, April 5 at Kauffman Stadium, but maybe they could have use a downpour of rain instead of an onslaught of Baltimore’s batting as the Orioles took out the Royals 8-2.

The Orioles scored their first two runs in the second on a two-out single by Gary Sánchez. The Royals attempted to tie the game with two runners on with no one out in the fifth, but Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano got the next three batters to pop out. Baltimore would put the game out of reach in the following inning, when the Orioles scored with two outs on three different singles. Bobby Witt Jr homered in the bottom half of the frame to account for the Royals’ lone run. Baltimore capped their scoring with a Tyler O’Neill triple in the seventh bringing home their final two runs.

Michael Wacha took the loss, going 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk, while striking out five. Relievers Sam Long and Chris Stratton were also tagged with a pair of earned runs in their appearances.

The loss drops the Royals to 3-5 on the year, tied with Cleveland for second in the AL Central. The Royals still have a chance to win their first series of the year when they take on Baltimore again Sunday afternoon. Kris Bubic gets the start for Kansas City, with first pitch at 1:10 p.m.; we’ll have pregame coverage from 12:30 on KMMO-FM 102.9.

The St Louis Cardinals were rained out Saturday in Boston. A day-night doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday at Fenway Park. The makeup game is set for 12:35 p.m., while the regularly scheduled series finale remains at 6:05 p.m.
