A Minnesota Twins fielding error in the eighth inning opened the door for the Kansas City Royals, and Bobby Witt Jr ran right through it as he plated the go-ahead run in the Royals’ 2-1 win Tuesday, April 8 at Kauffman Stadium.
With one out, Witt sent a bouncer to Twins reliever Griffin Jax, who threw the ball over the head of first baseman Ty France, allowing Witt to advance to third. Jax got Vinnie Pasquantino to ground to France, who opted to throw Pasquantino out at first instead of attempt a play at the plate. It was a similar setup for the Royals’ first run in the fourth, when Salvador Perez hit a grounder that also resulted in Witt scoring while Pasquantino was forced out at second.
The Twins had threatened at the top of the eighth, with runners at first and third with one out, but John Schreiber coaxed Carlos Correa to ground into a double play to escape the jam. Their lone run came in the fifth off a Harrison Bader single.
Cole Ragans had 11 strikeouts in his six innings of work. It was a quality start but a no-decision, allowing the lone Twins run on four hits. Schreiber picked up the win, going one-and-two-thirds innings and striking out one but allowing two hits. Daniel Lynch IV recorded the final out to secure his first save of the season.
The Royals are above .500 for the first time this season, currently at 6-5. They’ll go for the series win Wednesday evening at 6:40, with Seth Lugo getting the start. Pregame coverage on KMMO-FM 102.9 begins at 6 p.m.
