Lexington city official addressed the recent gas explosion during a news conference earlier today.
Multiple city officials spoke about the explosion, which occurred Tuesday night at around 7:45 p.m. The explosion was reported behind a funeral home on 18th Street between Franklin and South streets. City Administrator Shawnna Funderburk said the only injuries reported were to the three residents inside the home at the time of the explosion. Per the family’s request, city officials have not released information regarding the severity of those injuries.
Deputy Chief of the Missouri Department of Public Safety’s Fire Investigation Unit Scott Stoneberger reported that personnel are still on the scene to investigate the incident.
Director of Operations for Liberty Utilities Jeff McChristian reported that workers were called the residence prior to the explosion to investigate an outside gas leak. Liberty Gas soon found out there was a damaged main at the residence. McChristian couldn’t provide any more information about the exact cause of the explosion at this time. As of right now, Liberty Gas has shut off gas service in the city. Crews are currently shutting off meters in the city and will conduct safety inspections when gas service is restored.
KMMO will provide an update when more information becomes available.
