Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek paid a visit to the Saline County Courthouse on Wednesday, April 16 to highlight an opportunity for persons with disabilities to save funds to cover their expenses.

During his visit with county leaders, Malek touted the upcoming anniversary of MOABLE accounts, which were established to allow persons with disabilities the opportunity to save funds for necessary expenses, without the risk of losing their other benefits. Malek tells KMMO News the accounts function similarly to 529 education savings accounts.

Malek says that 4300 Missourians have established accounts since the program’s inception eight years ago. He says that the accounts allow contributors to either invest in mutual funds or treat the funds as a savings account.

Persons eligible for MOABLE accounts are required to have a documented disability prior to the age of 26; however, Malek notes that the age limit will increase to 46 next year, making the accounts more accessible for disabled veterans.

Details about the MOABLE program are available on the website of Missouri State Treasurer Vivek Malek.

The Saline County Commission, along with Saline County Treasurer Jared Brewer and Public Administrator Paula Barr, took part in Wednesday afternoon’s visit.
