The top-seeded Winnipeg Jets got two goals past Jordan Binnington in the third period, and an empty-netter for good measure, as the Jets came from behind to defeat the St Louis Blues 5-3 Saturday, April 19 north of the border.
Kyle Connor snapped in the game-winner with 96 seconds remaining, sending his shot from Binnington’s left to give the hosts the lead. An empty-netter 40 seconds later from Adam Lowry sealed the win for Winnipeg, undoing a tense effort by the Blues to try and snatch a series-opening win. The Blues had scored first, 9:30 into the game with a power-play goal by Robert Thomas. Mark Scheifele responded with a power-play goal of his own four minutes later. The Jets would take the lead with five minutes left in the first period with a tip-in. The lead would only last for three minutes before Oskar Sundqvist evened the game with a wrist shot. The Blues had the only goal in the second with Jordan Kyrou’s power-play goal late in the frame.
Winnipeg outshot the Blues 26-17, with the Jets overwhelming the Blues in the third period nine shots to two.
The Jets now have a one-game-to-none advantage in the best-of-seven series. Game Two is Monday night at 6:30 p.m. in Winnipeg.
