A sacrifice fly from Bobby Witt Jr brought in leadoff runner Drew Waters, as the Kansas City Royals snapped a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, April 20.

Mark Canha’s single with one out in the eighth tied the game for the Royals, bringing home Witt after an error advanced him into scoring position. The Royals had struck first with RBI singles in the second from Vinnie Pasquantino and then Waters. Detroit grabbed those two runs back in the fifth with singles from Kerry Carpenter and Zach McKinstry. McKinstry then gave the Tigers the lead in his next at-bat when his ground ball single went to left field, allowing Gleyber Torres to score.

Carlos Estévez went two innings to claim the win, allowing just one walk while striking out one. Michael Wacha had the no decision, allowing two runs in 5.1 innings on seven hits while striking out five. The Royals claimed two runs and seven hits off Tarik Skubal over five innings, also drawing one walk while striking out four times.

The Royals will be glad to return home after a ten-game road trip that saw them go 2-8 with no days off. They’re now 9-14 and third in the AL Central, 4.5 games behind the Tigers. With Monday a day off, the Royals prepare for the start of their homestand when the NL’s current cellar-dwellers Colorado Rockies pay a visit. Kris Bubic will get the start, with first pitch at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday night; pregame begins at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
