The St Louis Cardinals tied the game in the sixth, then blew the game wide open with three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to post a 10-4 victory Tuesday, April 22 over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park.
The Cardinals claimed the first runs of the game in the third when Lars Nootbaar launched his fourth home run of the season, sending the two-run shot to right field. However, the Braves struck back in the fourth with a solo home run from Sean Murphy, an RBI double from Alex Verdugo, and then a single from Austin Riley that Cardinals starting pitcher Andre Pallante misfielded, resulting in an error. Matt Olson added a home run in the fifth for the hosts. The Cardinals tied the game in the sixth with a bases-loaded single from Masyn Winn, followed by a wild pitch from Dylan Lee that brought home Jordan Walker.
The game-winning hit came with two outs in the eighth inning, when with the bases loaded, Nolan Gorman delivered a line drive to right field that cleared the bases. Victor Scott the Second, Masyn Winn, and Lars Nootbaar all recorded RBIs in the ninth to add insult to injury for the Braves. Scott went three-for-four on the night, crossing home plate all three times while recording an RBI and drawing a walk. Nootbaar joined Willson Contreras and Alec Burleson in also having a multi-hit night.
Steven Matz went 2.2 innings in relief of Pallante to get the win. Mats allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning a pair. Pallante lasted 4.2 innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks, with one strikeout.
The Cardinals advance to 10-14 on the year, trailing the Cubs in the NL Central by four-and-a-half games. The Redbirds have a matinee Wednesday to cap their trip to Atlanta, as Miles Mikolas will get the start. First pitch is at 11:15 a.m.
