The St Louis Cardinals continued to struggle on the road, falling 3-1 to the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, April 28 at Great American Ballpark.
The Cardinals scored first with Nolan Arenado’s single, but that was the only damage the offense would provide, as Arenado and two others would ground into double plays. The Cardinals were one-for-six from scoring position, with three runners left on base. The Reds chipped away at the Redbirds, first with Jose Trevino’s home run in the third, then a triple from Noelvi Marte to left field in the fifth. That triple scored Gavin Lux, who then added an RBI double in the sixth to complete the scoring.
Andre Pallante took the loss, his second of the year. He went six innings and allowed all three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out four. Nick Martinez picked up his first win of the year for Cincinnati, allowing the one run on five hits and two walks while fanning three over six innings.
The Cardinals fall to 12-17 on the season, including a 2-12 road record that has the Cardinals fourth in the NL Central. Game two of the series is Tuesday afternoon at 5:40 p.m., with Mikes Mikolas getting the start for St Louis. Former Royal Brady Singer will get the start for Cincinnati, looking for his fifth win of the year.
The Kansas City Royals were off Monday and will start a three-game series Tuesday afternoon in Tampa against the Rays. Michael Lorenzen gets the start for the Royals, with first pitch from Steinbrenner Field at 6:05 p.m. Pregame on KMMO-FM 102.9 begins at 5:30 p.m.
