25-0430-greg-prather

James Gregory “Greg” Prather, born on May 16, 1941, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2025, at the age of 83. He was surrounded by the love of his life of 62 years, Donnis Prather, their children Suzanne Hudson and David (Andrette) Prather, and their beloved grandchildren: Collin Hudson, Cole (Hannah) Prather, Brennan Hudson, Claire Prather, Quinn Hudson, and Carter Prather. Greg and Donnis were united in marriage October 20th, 1962. He was the son of James F. Prather and Genevieve (Gennie) McNulty and is survived by his brother Steven (Renea) Prather, along with several nieces and nephews.

Greg graduated from Tarkio High School in 1959 and went on to attend Tarkio College, where he played football and earned a Bachelor of Education degree in 1963. He later completed both his Master’s and Specialist degrees at the University of Mississippi in Oxford in 1966. Greg’s passion for education led him to teach Business Education at Rock Port and Platte City Schools before transitioning into school leadership. He served as principal at Stanberry and superintendent at both the Southwest of Ludlow and Tarkio school districts. Most notably, Greg served as the superintendent of the Santa Fe R-X School District for 25 years, where he led with vision and care. Among his many accomplishments were organizing the annual high school trips to Washington, D.C., New York, and Philadelphia, and overseeing two major building projects. In recognition of his dedication, the gymnasium—completed in 2005—was named the Greg Prather Gymnasium in his honor. Mr. Prather remained actively involved with the students all throughout the years. Greg and his wife still attended many activities after retirement, and you’d probably hear a hardy “Go Chiefs!”.

A lifelong lover of music, Greg sang for many years with The Pony Expressmen of St. Joseph, Missouri. He also played piano duets and was an active member of his church choir. Greg was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities. After retiring, Greg and Donnis traveled extensively across all 50 states in their RV, creating many cherished memories together. Above all, Greg loved and was immensely proud of his family, especially his grandchildren. He rarely missed a game, concert, or school event, and his joy came from watching them grow into the people they are today. A passionate educator and community leader, Greg took great pride in the Santa Fe R-X School District and never missed an opportunity to share his “Santa Fe Pride.” He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to education, his love of music and travel, and the deep, abiding love he had for his family and community.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Santa Fe High School Gymnasium in Alma with Pastor Andrew Sanders officiating.
