Day-to-day business continues at the Marshall City Office Building, as the city council begins to address the question of who will become the city’s next mayor.
City officials released a brief statement late Tuesday morning announcing the resignation of Vince Lutterbie as mayor, after two years in office. City administrator JD Kehrman says processes are in place to continue city functions until a new mayor is appointed by the council.
Fourth Ward Councilman Craig Thompson has presided over the four most recent regular city council meetings as mayor pro tem, and was reappointed to the role at the council’s April 15 meeting. Kehrman adds that the council has options under city code as to when and how to appoint a new mayor. Marshall last had to appoint an interim mayor in April 2022 following the resignation of Julie Schwetz. The council at that time received two applications, selecting then-councilman Dewey Hendrix.
Kehrman says the council will have more than just a vacancy to deal with at their next meeting Tuesday, as they’ll need to review bids for the city’s slate of street projects for the year.
Administrator JD Kehrman notes that stormwater improvement projects are also proceeding across the city, as well as discussions with Marshall Public Schools ahead of the demolition of the Eastwood Elementary School building.
