The St Louis Blues were 1.6 seconds away from eliminating the top-seeded Winnipeg Jets, but a tip-in by Cole Perfetti forced overtime, and another tip-in by Adam Lowry sent the Blues home for the season with a 4-3 loss in double overtime.
The Blues had taken the lead 70 seconds into the contest, when Jordan Kyrou sent a backhander past Connor Hellebuyck. Six minutes later the advantage grew to 2-0 after Mathieu Joseph landed a wrist shot into goal. Perfetti needed just one shot on the power play halfway through the second period to put Winnipeg on the board, and Radek Faksa made the score 3-1 with 35 seconds left in the middle frame when Nathan Walker set up his wrist shot.
Winnipeg threw everything at the Blues in the third, turning a 16-13 shot disadvantage on its head by taking 15 shots on Jordan Binnington in the third period alone, while limiting the Blues to just four shots. Winnipeg pulled Hellebuyck with under three minutes to go, and the extra attacker paid off when Vladislav Namestnikov bagged his wrist shot with 1:56 remaining. Winnipeg came close to claiming the tying goal with 66 seconds to go, but replay confirmed that the puck did not cross the line and was in Binnington’s control. Perfetti’s tying goal deflated the Blues’ optimism and staved off the curse of the President’s Trophy, at least for the time being.
The first overtime had the Jets outshoot the Blues 11-4, but neither side could capitalize on their opportunities. Winnipeg outshot the Blues 8-5 in the second overtime, and wore down the Blues to where the defense was ill-prepared for Neal Pionk’s shot from Binnington’s left bouncing off Lowry’s stick and into the net.
The Blues season ends with a 4-3 series loss to Winnipeg, after going 44-30-8 in the regular season to secure the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.
