The Kansas City Royals hit a franchise-record seven home runs—six of them solo shots—to claim an 11-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, May 4 at Camden Yards.
The Royals and Orioles exchanged home runs in the second inning, with Maikel Garcia and Jackson Holliday claiming their respective teams’ first runs. Baltimore took the lead with a double from Adley Rutschman in the third, only for Drew Waters to hit a two-RBI single in the top of the fourth to give the Royals the lead back. Holliday tied the game with his second home run in the fourth. Jonathan India and Cedric Mullins would contribute to the derby in the fifth, followed by Ryan O’Hearn’s solo blast to give the Orioles the lead. Garcia tied the game up with his second home run in the sixth, then the Royals claimed the lead for good in the seventh when Bobby Witt Jr and Vinnie Pasquantino both joined in on the record-setting action.
Luke Maile would secure the home run in the top of the eighth that would tie the MLB record for most one-run home runs in a game, and Michael Massey’s two-run blast would equal the feat achieved twice in baseball history, more recently in 2022 between the Diamondbacks and Cubs at Wrigley Field. Witt brought in a run in the eighth with an RBI double, offset by an RBI single from Ryan Mountcastle in the bottom half of the frame.
Angel Zerpa claimed the win for his 1.2 innings of work, allowing one run on three hits. Michael Lorenzen went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while walking one but striking out five.
The series win has the Royals at 19-16, three games behind Detroit for first in the AL Central. The Royals return home to host the Chicago White Sox on Monday. Cole Ragans is set to return to the mound after missing his last start because of a groin injury. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
