The Sedalia City Council gave its approval Monday, May 6 to the purchase of a special response vehicle for the police department.

Mayor Andrew Dawson says the purchase of a Terradyne Armored Vehicle for $307,930 was already budgeted for the current fiscal year, but the need for it became particularly apparent after Friday morning’s shooting incident near Longwood that injured two Pettis County Sheriff’s Deputies.

The council had initially budgeted up to $275,000 for the purchase. A restricted donation will cover $50,000 of the cost.

Also Monday night, the council adopted a new ordinance regulating the use of Jake Brakes in the city limits. Dawson says new second ward councilman Lee Scribner had fielded complaints from residents along Broadway Boulevard (U.S. Route 50) about their use.

A previous ordinance was adopted in 2001 but was repealed in 2016 after it was deemed unenforceable. The new ordinance requires anyone using a compression-release engine braking system to have a muffler connected to reduce the sound. The ordinance also directs city staff to arrange with the Missouri Department of Transportation the installation of signs informing drivers of the ordinance taking effect.
