The Kansas City Royals took advantage of late defensive miscues by the Chicago White Sox, as bases-loaded singles by Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr gave the Royals a 4-3 walkoff winner Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
The White Sox bats were unusually active, with their leadoff batter reaching base for five straight innings. Twice that batter was Matt Thaiss, who scored for Chicago in the fourth and sixth innings. Josh Rojas brought in Chicago’s final run with a single in the eighth. The Royals struggled against Sean Burke, who held the Royals to four hits in 6.1 innings while striking out two and allow three walks. He did allow a home run to Kyle Isbel in the first pitch of the sixth inning. The Royals began to wear down the Southsiders in the eighth, as Salvador Perez sent a two-out double over the head of Brooks Baldwin, allowing Vinnie Pasquantino to score from first. The final inning saw Cam Booser allow a leadoff walk to Mark Canha, then the White Sox commit a fielding error before another three singles closed out the game for the Royals. The loss was Booser’s third of the year and first blown save.
Taylor Clarke pitched a scoreless ninth and recorded the final out of the eighth to claim his first win of the year. Starter Seth Lugo had two hits (one earned) on seven hits and three walks, striking out three across 6.2 innings.
The Royals have won their last four games and are now 21-16, two games behind AL Central leaders Detroit, who were idled by inclement weather and unable to get their game in at Colorado. The Royals will look to clinch a series win Wednesday evening when they send Michael Wacha to the mound. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
