A two-run home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the Kansas City Royals’ 3-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, May 11.

Starter Seth Lugo gave up the long bomb to Rafael Devers with one out in the top of the sixth. It was the second home run Lugo allowed during his six innings, as Wilyer Abreu launched his tenth home run of the year in the top of the fourth. The Royals had scored in the third when Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice bunt scored Drew Waters, aided by a throwing error by Boston’s starting pitcher, Lucas Giolito. Despite the error, Giolito limited the Royals to two hits and a walk in 6.2 innings, striking out five for his first win of the year. The Royals were just allowed four singles on the day, as Aroldis Chapman booked his sixth save of the season. Lugo took the loss, allowing all three Boston runs on six hits, while fanning five.

The Royals now sit at 24-18, still tied for second in the AL Central as Cleveland and Detroit also lost Sunday. They pay a visit to Houston to face the Astros starting Monday evening, with Michael Wacha getting the start. First pitch from Daikin Park is at 7:10 p.m., with pregame at 6:30 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
