More than a fifth of Missouri is in need of adequate moisture, according to this week’s update to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The weekly update from the National Drought Mitigation Center finds that 22.02 percent of the state is in drought or abnormal dryness, all north of the Missouri River. That’s an increase of 3.4 percentage points from last week, after northern Linn and northwestern Livingston counties were among 11 counties that fell into pre-drought stage. Meanwhile, moderate drought returned to parts of five Northeast Missouri counties, while also making an appearance in Northwest Missouri’s Andrew, Buchanan, Holt, and surrounding counties. 6.92 percent of Missouri is now in the first stage of drought conditions.
