An eighth-grade student at Green Ridge R-VIII School is pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout by completing a service project improving her school’s safety and security.
Ariana Burton has participated in Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) for four years, including the past three with her local Scouts BSA troop. Burton recently began a project applying vinyl decals to doors and windows around the district, and explains the importance of the project.
As part of her project, Burton made a presentation to the Green Ridge school board at their March meeting, also seeking their permission to renumber the rooms at the elementary school. She says Scouts has helped her to grow confidence in her ability to speak in public.
Roughly four percent of youth who join Scouting America attain the rank of Eagle Scout. In addition to completing a service project, Eagle Scouts must earn 21 merit badges before the age of 18. Last year 28,892 scouts attained the top honor.
