The St. Louis Cardinals rallied late to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Saturday, May 23.
Ivan Herrera gave St. Louis the lead in the first with an RBI single. Arizona would tie the game in the fifth with a solo homer from Randal Grichuk.
That would be the only blemish for starter Matthew Liberatore, who went seven innings, giving up six hits and striking out four.
The Cardinals regained the lead in the seventh with a two-run double from Jordan Walker. Yohel Pozo added another run in the inning with a groundout.
The Diamondbacks responded against the St. Louis bullpen, scoring three runs against Kyle Leahy and one more off of Steven Matz, aided by some poor defense from the Cardinals.
Down 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Nolan Arenado would tie the game with an RBI groundout, scoring Herrera. Walker would come through with another hit, this time driving home the eventual game-winning run with a single up the middle.
St. Louis improves to 29-23, two games behind the Cubs for the NL Central lead. They’ll go for the sweep today, with first pitch from Busch Stadium beginning at 1:15 p.m.
