Noah Cameron allowed just one run and six hits in his 6.1 innings of work, and the Kansas City Royals offense made use of Cameron’s fourth quality start in as many appearances, as they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 3-2 on Wednesday, May 29 at Kauffman Stadium.
Cameron matched a feat recorded only one other time in the past 130 years, joining Cleveland’s Cody Anderson in allowing no more than one run and going at least 6.1 innings in each of his first four career starts. His only run allowed came in the sixth inning, when he gave up a walk and then two singles with two outs. Cameron was able to force a groundout to escape the jam.
The Royals opened the scoring in the fourth with an RBI single from Drew Waters that escaped the infield, allowing Maikel Garcia to score from first. Bobby Witt Jr added an RBI double in the fifth to bring home John Rave. Witt’s sacrifice fly to right field in the seventh proved to be the game winner, after Spencer Steer singled in the eighth to bring the Reds back within one. Carlos Estévez recorded a four-out save, striking out two to get his 15th save of the season.
The Royals are now 30-27, still a game out of the three wild card positions, currently shared by Cleveland, Houston and Minnesota. The Royals have a crucial opportunity to reverse the widening gap with the league-leading Detroit Tigers, who travel to Kauffman Stadium to begin a three-game series Friday night. Seth Lugo is expected to return from his stint on the disabled list to get the start. First pitch will be at 7:10 p.m., with pregame at 6:30 p.m., on KMMO-FM 102.9.
