Dejan Joveljic claimed two goals while substitute Santiago Muñoz added another, lifting Sporting Kansas City to a 3-1 road win Saturday, May 31 at the Houston Dynamo.
Houston struck first with Sebastian Kowalczyk’s goal in the 13th minute, but from there, Sporting would take control. The Serbian striker Joveljic levelled the game just before half by converting a deflection in the box to a comfortably slotted goal. Joveljic gave Sporting the lead in the 52nd minute, positioning himself to send a shot deflected off the crossbar in the right corner of the net for his 50th career league goal. The insurance goal came from Muñoz—his first career MLS goal—in stoppage time. Sporting keeper Jon Pulskamp recorded eight saves in the winning effort.
Meanwhile at Energizer Park in St Louis, Eduard Löwen bagged a penalty kick in stoppage time to snap St Louis City SC’s 11-game winless streak with a 2-1 victory over San Jose. Simon Becher won the penalty after he was fouled in the box, setting up the winning attempt. Löwen provided the assist for João Klauss in the 41st minute to open the scoring, only for San Jose’s Josef Martinez to score in the 83rd minute to level the score.
Kansas City moves up to 12th in the Western Conference standings with the win, now on 16 points, four points behind Houston for the ninth and final playoff position. St Louis remain 14th with 14 points. Both squads travel to the West Coast next weekend for Sunday evening tilts. St Louis City will visit Portland on June 8th, with kickoff at 6 p.m., while Sporting KC travel to Los Angeles to take on LAFC at 8 p.m.
