After losing six of their last seven series, the Kansas City Royals are calling on their top minor league prospect to turn the club’s offense around.
The Royals announced Monday, June 2 that they will call up Jac Caglianone, setting up the first baseman and outfielder for his major league debut Tuesday night at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals. The move comes less than a year after the Royals used the sixth overall pick in the draft to select Caglianone from the University of Florida. Since beginning the season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Caglianone has slugged his way to 25 home runs and 56 runs batted in, with a .322 batting average and .389 on-base percentage. Six of those home runs have came in the 12 games he’s played for Triple-A Omaha since moving up May 20.
In order to add Caglianone to the roster, the Royals have optioned outfielder Dairon Blanco to Omaha. Caglianone’s arrival is seen as a needed boost for the Royals offense, who have averaged fewer than three runs per game since May 8th, in a span where the Royals have gone 8-13 and fallen eight games behind the Detroit Tigers for the AL Central lead. The Royals and Cardinals will face off to start the second half of the I-70 Series on Tuesday night, when Michael Lorenzen will get the start for the Royals against Andre Pallante. Pregame is at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9, with first pitch at 6:45 p.m.
