Hits from Nolan Gorman and Nolan Arenado gave the St Louis Cardinals a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, June 7 at Busch Stadium.

Gorman led off the ninth inning with a ground-rule double, and was replaced by pinch runner Jose Barrero. He advanced to third on a throwing error by Dodgers reliever Ben Casparius, who attempted to field a bunt from Pedro Pagés. That set up Nolan Arenado’s single to left field, which brought home Barrero for the winning run.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, when with two outs, Alec Burleson singled a hit off Casparius, who was late on the throw to first. That gave Masyn Winn a window to score from second, beating the throw to the plate. The lead would not hold, as despite Freedie Freeman swinging at a pitch in the dirt for strike three, the ball rolled away from the plate, allowing Shohei Ohtani to score from third.

Both teams had runners and scoring opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize through the first seven innings. The Cardinals left ten on base but went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, while the Dodgers stranded 12 and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Both starters contributed to the stranded runners, as Cardinals starter Erich Fedde went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits but giving up four walks while striking out a pair. Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out nine in his six innings of work, allowing four hits and two walks. Despite the wild pitch, Ryan Helsley earned the win, recording strikeouts for all three of his outs while allowing two hits and the earned run. Casparius took the loss for the Dodgers.

The Redbirds are now 36-28, still a half-game behind the Giants and Padres for the third wild card spot and four games behind the Cubs for the NL Central lead. The Cardinals can claim a sweep of the Dodgers on Sunday when Michael McGreevy gets the start. First pitch at Busch Stadium is at 1:15 p.m.
