Former St Louis Cardinal Tommy Edman recorded three RBIs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-3 win Sunday, June 8 at Busch Stadium, preventing the Cardinals from sweeping the defending World Series champions.
Edman brought home the Dodgers’ first run in the second, sending a one-out single into center field. He and Will Smith then scored on a triple from Hyeseong Kim to make the score 3-0. Edman added an RBI double in the fourth, which was answered in the fifth by Masyn Winn’s RBI double. Alec Burleson delivered a sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth to cut the Cardinal deficit to two. Mookie Betts then homered in the seventh, answered by an RBI single in the home half of the frame by Willson Contreras. Edman claimed his third RBI of the afternoon with a sac fly in the eighth that brought home Teoscar Hernández. The Dodgers’ final run came on a bases-loaded walk later in the inning, aided by two batters hit by pitches from Matt Svanson.
Despite outhitting the Dodgers 11-10, the Cardinals left nine on base, including five in scoring position. The Cardinals claimed six hits off Clayton Kershaw, who got the win with seven strikeouts and just one earned run in six innings. Michael McGreevy also went six innings but took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits while fanning five.
The Cardinals remain four games behind the Cubs in the NL Central, and are now a game behind Philadelphia for the third wild card spot. St Louis will host the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday evening, with Andre Pallante getting the start. First pitch at Busch Stadium is at 6:45 p.m.
