The St Louis Cardinals scored four runs in the eighth, but a solo home run and leadoff double countered the comeback effort, as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Redbirds 5-4 in ten innings Monday night at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals were behind 3-0 when they started getting to the Toronto bullpen. With two outs in the eighth, Willson Contreras singled a grounder to right field to bring Victor Scott II home. Two pitches later, Iván Herrera sent a fly ball over left field for a three-run home run. However, Toronto’s bats were not silenced. After a first-inning double from George Springer, second-inning single by Bo Bichette, and eighth-inning home run by Alejandro Kirk, the Blue Jays tied the game by Jonathan Clase connecting on Ryan Helsley’s pitch, sending it to center field. That marked Helsley’s fifth blown save of the season. The tenth inning saw Kirk send a double off the wall of left field, bringing in the leadoff runner that turned out to be the game-winner.
Despite the blown save, Yariel Rodríguez picked up his first win of the year. He went 1.1 innings and allowed two hits on two runs while striking out two. Phil Maton was tacked with his second loss of the year, allowing the unearned run with Kirk’s double and two walks. Andre Pallante went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Cardinals are 36-30, four games behind the Cubs in the NL Central and 1.5 games behind San Diego for the third wild card spot. Game two of the series against Toronto is Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. Miles Mikolas gets the start for St Louis.
