The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education has approved the district’s budget for the next fiscal year.
Board members gave approval to the budget during a brief meeting Tuesday, June 10. Supt. Caleb Petet reported that he’s anticipating a $1 million deficit spend, but that he believes that reduced expenses that come following the closure of Benton, Eastwood and Northwest elementary schools, and elimination of the district’s copy center, will make up the deficit. He cites the reduced costs that came following the closure of Southeast Elementary, which he said came in well above the initially budgeted amount.
Among the items also approved by the school board was the creation of a position for a district head nurse, replacing the school nurse positions at the three former elementary schools.
The Marshall school board also began closing the books on fiscal year 2025 by approving a series of fund transfers and updated budget figures. They also renewed their bank depository services with Exchange Bank, and gave first reading to a series of policy updates provided by the Missouri School Boards Association. The board also agreed to set their next meeting for July 2 in the Central Office board room, as the normal meeting space of the cafeteria at the Tom Butterfield Early Childhood Center will be unavailable for maintenance.
