A pair of three-run home runs gave St Louis Cardinals fans hope, but the Toronto Blue Jays once again shut the door on a potential Redbird comeback by holding on for a 10-9 win Tuesday, June 10 at Busch Stadium.

The Blue Jays started the game with a three-run home run of their own, off the bat of Andrés Giménez. Toronto added another run in the top of the fourth, but the Cardinals would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. After Nolan Arenado’s RBI single that also advanced Alec Burleson to third, Nolan Gorman sent a fly ball to right field for the Cardinals’ first home run of the game.

Toronto quickly rebuilt their lead in the fifth with a double from Addison Barger and a sacrifice fly from George Springer. The two exchanged two-run home runs in the right, Toronto’s by Alejandro Kirk and St Louis’ by Nolan Arenado. Toronto would score in the ninth with a line drive single from Giménez and a wild pitch. The Cardinals attempted one last comeback, when Willson Contreras launched a three-run blast to center field off the first pitch from Jeff Hoffman. However, Hoffman got Burleson to ground out, in the process claiming his 17th save of the season.

Miles Mikolas took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings, while striking out two. Chris Bassitt struck out three while allowing four runs, six hits and two walks across seven innings for his seventh win of the year.

The Cardinals now sit at 36-31, a half-game ahead of Milwaukee for second in the NL Central, with a five-game deficit to the Cubs. They also trail the Phillies by two games for the third wild card spot. The Cardinals will look to avoid the sweep Wednesday afternoon as Matthew Liberatore takes the mound. First pitch at Busch Stadium is at 1:15 p.m.
