The New York Yankees overwhelmed the Kansas City Royals with five runs in the second, en route to a 6-3 win Wednesday, June 11 at Kauffman Stadium.

The trouble for the Royals started when Cody Bellinger led off the second with a triple. He was brought home on a groundout. The Yankees would claim their next four runs with two outs in the inning, with an RBI double from Austin Wells, a single from Paul Goldschmidt, and single from Ben Rice. Aaron Judge added a solo home run in the seventh inning, his 25th of the season. The Royals weren’t able to score until the ninth inning, when Salvador Perez belted a two-run home run to left field, and John Rave had and RBI single that brought home Nick Loftin. Relief pitcher Mark Leiter Jr had a throwing error on the play, prompting the Yankees to bring in Devin Williams to get the last two outs and lock down the win.

Clarke Schmidt limited the Royals to two hits in his six innings for the win. He struck out seven batters while allowing three walks. Kris Bubic took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and four walks while striking out three.

The Royals sit at 34-34, now 9.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central and two games behind Tampa Bay for the third wild card spot. Seth Lugo is tasked with preventing a Yankee sweep when he takes the bump Thursday evening. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
