The Kansas City Royals were shut out for the second time in three games, as their losing skid hit five after a 4-0 loss to the Athletics on Saturday, June 14 at Kauffman Stadium.

Max Muncy hit a two-run home run to left field in the second inning to get the A’s on the board. They would build on their lead in the fourth when Luis Urías doubled on a fly ball to left field. Lawrence Butler added a solo home run to lead off the seventh. Three of the four runs were charged to starter Michael Lorenzen, who allowed four hits and three walks while striking out four in the loss, his seventh of the year. Jacob Lopez posted six shutout innings with nine strikeouts, allowing just three hits and one walk for his first win of the year.

After the game, the Royals reportedly had a players-only meeting in the clubhouse to assess their current state. Saturday’s loss doomed the Royals to their seventh straight series loss against an American League opponent, falling three games under .500 at 34-37. However, everyone in the Central Division loss, keeping the Royals 11.5 games behind leaders Detroit and 2.5 games behind Minnesota for the third wild card spot.
