A sacrifice fly in the fourth inning put the Milwaukee Brewers ahead, and a groundout in the seventh was their game winner, as the Brewers defeated the St Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Sunday, June 15 to take three out of four against the visiting Redbirds at American Family Field.

After the Cardinals’ Willson Contreras brought home Brendan Donovan on a grounder in the top of the fourth, the Brewers struck back with a leadoff home run from Christian Yelich to tie the game. The Brewers took the lead when Drew Avans sent a flyball to Jordan Walker for the inning’s second out, allowing Rhys Hoskins to score the go-ahead run.

Sal Frelick brought in the winning run when he grounded out to Cardinals pitcher John King, who was only able to set up the forceout at first as the grounder was well-placed and allowed Caleb Durbin to easily score. Iván Herrera made it a one-run game with a solo home run in the eighth. The Cardinals had back-to-back singles in the ninth to put themselves in position to tie the game, but even with a wild pitch putting both runners in scoring position, Milwaukee’s Trevor Megill struck out the next three batters to claim his 15th save of the year.

Miles Mikolas experienced his fourth loss of the year, going six innings while allowing two runs on six hits and one walk, striking out seven. Quinn Priester recorded his fifth win of the season, going six innings and allowing one run on four hits while adding three punchouts.

The Cardinals are now in a tie for third in the NL Central with Cincinnati at 37-35, seven games behind the Cubs and three games behind the Padres for the third wild card spot. It’s a travel day for the Cardinals, but it won’t be much of a journey, as they’ll start a three-game interleague series Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox.
